Stress Relief For Seniors - Retirement

Stress relief for seniors can be broken down into two categories. The first is the transitional stage where a person is retiring from the workforce and must find a new role in society. Hopefully, most people look forward to the freedom that retirement can give but some people can feel their life is empty which can lead to depression and stress. The second stage is living as a senior and the changes that occur in your lifestyle as you age. This article will highlights some major causes of stress in these two categories and suggest some ways to deal with it.

People react differently to retiring from work. Some people are glad to be finished. They have all sorts of other plans and challenges ahead and they can't wait to get started. Some other people might feel that a huge part of their life has suddenly vanished overnight and struggle to fill their time and loose a sense of their identity.

This sense of lose or emptiness can cause depression, anxiety and stress in the person experiencing it. They have not adjusted to their new reality and it will continue to cause them stress until they address this issue. The key to adjustment is to create a new life. It sounds simple but some people have invested 20, 30 or 40 plus years of their life doing the job; it is who they are.

The first step is to be happy about creating the new life. Make your peace with your old life. Be thankful for what it has given you and look to the future. If you can start doing this just before you retire you will be well placed to embrace your new life.

Once you have accepted that the old way is over it is now time to look at the opportunities that are in front of you. A recent trend in the workplace seems to be encouraging older people to work. Maybe a retired person could arrange to work part time at his/her old job. Maybe they could do another job that they always fancied doing.

Other than work related activities, they could consider all kinds of activities that fill up the gap of their old life. Taking a hobby, going on trips or caring for the granchildren could all provide ways to give them fulfillment. Explore social organisations and functions that you could attend. It does take time to adjust, during this period it is important not to isolate yourself from society. Take part in the new opportunities that are available to you even if they are not always what you may be looking for.

Another source of potential stress for newly retired people is the change in your income and financial status. Some people may be comfortable if they have planned for retirement but others may not be as fortunate. Financial planning is the best way to allay any concerns. Most people manage to do this. They will create a budget for shopping and other living expenses. Consult with local councils and government officials about any benefits that may be available to senior citizens, like heating rebates during winter or concessions on public transport. Stay informed on these issues as they change over time.
